Everyday Oils: Lavender

Lavender is often called the “Swiss Army Knife” of essential oils. it is an incredibly versatile oil!

I use it every single day!  It’s an ingredient in my homemade facial oil, my homemade facial wipes, my LLP allergy bomb, my relaxing bath salts, my Itch Away roll-on…you get the idea. I diffuse it nightly to ensure a good night’s sleep, and I use it on my dog Sierra every day to lower her anxiety when we head to work. It’s such a gentle oil, you can use it neat, or dilute it with a carrier oil.

From the Essential Oils Pocket Reference, “lavender’s regenerating abilities were first discovered by Rene Gattefosse, when he severely burned his arm in a laboratory explosion. In a study done at the University of Miami, researchers found that inhalation of lavender oil increased beta waves in the brain, suggesting heightened relaxation. It also reduced depression and improved cognitive performance. (Diego MA, et al., 1998). A 2001 Osaka Kyoiku University study found that lavender reduced mental stress and increased alertness (Motomura, 2001).”

Lavender is one of the most commonly adulterated essential oils. Many lavender essential oils that are sold in stores and online often have lavandin or synthetic ingredients added. You want to make sure you use pure, therapeutic grade essential oils. I only use Young Living oils. You can learn more about Young Living oils here.

Stop That Itch!

After yesterday’s post about the best bug spray ever, I realized I had not posted about my Itch Away roll on! This was actually my very first essential oil blend I ever used. A week after receiving my PSK (premium starter kit), I had a flare up of a recurring condition. I was itchy and in some pain and so desperately trying to avoid the months-long recovery I dealt with during my first flare up.

Stop THAT Itch! (1)

I was very new to essential oils, so I relied on my handy-dandy pocket reference and the wonderful Simply Natural Facebook group as resources. Not only did the blend reduce the itching/pain from that flare up, it’s now a staple in my oily medicine cabinet. Any time I have a minor skin irritation(bug bites, rash, contact dermatitis, etcetera), I pull out my new roller blend!

Here’s my recipe:

Itch Away Roller Blend

10 drops tea tree essential oil

10 drops lavender essential oil

20 drops fractionated coconut oil

Want to know the only essential oils I recommend? Check here for why I only use Young Living essential oils!

Use a small metal funnel to pour all ingredients into the roller bottle. Now you’ve got a great remedy ready to go whenever you need it!
